Whole Organ Approaches to Cellular Metabolism by James Bassingthwaighte
The field of capillary-tissue exchange physiology has been galvanized twice in the past 25 years. A 1969 conference at the National Academy of Sciences in Copenhagen resulted in the book Capillary Permeability: The Transfer of Mole- cules and Ions Between the Capillary Blood and the Tissue (Crone and Lassen, 1970). It focused on the physiochemical aspects of transcapillary water and solute transport. The field has matured considerably since. This volume was designed as the successor to the 1970 book, and was created at a gathering of the authors at McGill University. It too captures the breadth of a field that has been dramatically enriched by numerous technical and conceptual advances. In 1970 it was already known that the capillary wall was not merely a cellophane bag exerting steric hindrances on solute particles. Instead, the endothelial surface was recognized as the site of binding reactions and permeation by passive or carrier-mediated trans- port. Furthermore, the cells of the blood could traverse evanescent wide openings in the zippered clefts. Today, research priorities have turned more to cell-cell interactions, toward understanding the utility of the gap junctional connections between endothelial cells and neighboring smooth muscle cells, neuronal twigs, and the parenchymal cells of organs. New discoveries in the past few years have revealed the critical importance of the close relationships between the endothelial cells and the parenchymal cells.| SKU | NLS9781461274490 |

"I was paying $11.99/month for Kindle Unlimited but realized I was renting books, not owning them. Bought this PDF and it's mine forever. Never going back to Kindle."
"Switched from Kindle to these PDFs. Same book, but I actually OWN it now. No monthly fees, no app required. Worth every penny."
"Kindle Unlimited kept raising prices. This is a one-time purchase and the file is permanently on my iPad. Best decision I've made for my reading habit."
"I compared Kindle vs this store. Kindle is cheaper monthly but you don't own anything. Here I paid once and the PDF is mine for life. Highly recommend."
"Left Kindle behind after they removed a book I was reading mid-series. With this PDF, nobody can take it away from me. True ownership feels good."
"Was skeptical about paying $18.95 when Kindle shows $3.99, but then I did the math — Kindle Unlimited is $143/year! This is way better value long term."
"Love that I can read this on any device without installing the Kindle app. The PDF works on my laptop, phone, and tablet seamlessly. So much freedom."
"My Kindle subscription was getting expensive. Switched to buying PDFs here and I'm saving money while actually building a permanent digital library I control."
