The investigations themselves, the evaluation of the findings and the transcription of the documents covered a period of 12 years. The authors, who planned and carried out the project together from the beginning, are equally responsible for all parts of the book. In 1964, we set up a work program at the Research Center for Progressive Psychiatry, which was set up by H.J. Weitbrecht and headed by G. Huber at the time, which, in continuation of earlier long-term studies on patients in Heidelberg and Wiesloch, set itself the goal of describing the lives of patients who had been clinically treated for schizophrenic psychosis at least once in their lives.
