Mycoplasma pneumonia is a manifestation of infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is part of the clinical picture of the so-called primary atypical pneumonias. An overview that contributes to a better understanding of this pneumonia would be of little use without including the entire spectrum of Mycopl_asma-pneumoniae infection, since it is not uncommon for extrapulmonary manifestations to make one think of this disease or pneumonia in the first place. Clinical reviews have been published by, among others: Brunner (1976), Cherry and Welliver (1976), Denny et al. (1971), Fransen (1970), Lepow et al. (1968); Murray et al. (1975), Siegenthaler (1968), Taylor-Robinson (1975). 2 History The causative agent of bovine pleuropnomy was discovered in 1898 by Nocard et al. (1898) and described by Novak in 1929 as Mycoplasma peripneumoniae. In the past, veterinary medicine has found numerous similar species, some of them pathogenic, which have been grouped together under the term pleuropnomia-like organisms (PPLO). In human medicine, the term primarily atypical pneumonia appeared in the 1930s in distinction to bacterial pneumonia. Reimann (1938) was probably the first person to describe a typical epidemic and also found a so-called filterable virus. Eaton et al. (1944) isolated the pathogen - referred to as Eaton agent - from patients suffering from atypical pneumonia and transferred it to local embryos and were able to produce lung decibition in animals. Griinholz (1950) also isolated a transmissible pathogen. It was thought of as a virus, as was Liu et al. (1957), which was transmitted to the . bronchial epithelium.
