"Die 3., aktualisierte Auflage des Lehrbuches bereitet Medizinstudenten und Ärzte in der Weiterbildung optimal auf das Prüfungsfach Laboratoriumsdiagnostik/Klinische Chemie vor. Nicht nur Grundwissen wird vermittelt, sondern vor allem die praktische Anwendung einer rationalen und rationellen Labordiagnostik in den Organfächern und der Pädiatrie. Im ersten Teil werden die wichtigsten Organ- u. Stoffwechselsysteme (wie Kohlenhydratstoffwechsel, Niere und ableitende Organsysteme, Immunsystem) hinsichtlich ihrer labordiagnostischen Parameter einheitlich dargestellt, wobei ausgewählte Laborparameter und Erkrankungen am Kapitelanfang aufgeführt sind. Zudem werden Praxisbeispiele einer gezielten Stufendiagnostik bei Vorliegen eines bestimmten Krankheitsverdachts anhand von sogenannten »Entscheidungsbäumen« demonstriert und erläutert. Der zweite Teil gibt einen prüfungsrelevanten Überblick über die allgemeine und spezielle klinisch-chemische Analytik sowie die Präanalytik.
Die dritte Auflage hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, noch mehr die praktische Anwendung der Laboratoriumsdiagnostik in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen. So kommt der kombinatorischen Betrachtung mehrerer Laborparameter in der Diagnose- und Verlaufsbeurteilung von Erkrankungen eine noch größere Bedeutung zu. Biomarker werden entwickelt, um Patienten im Rahmen »individualisierter« Therapiestrategien noch gezielter auszuwählen. Dieses Konzept, das ursprünglich aus der Tumortherapie entwickelt wurde, findet nunmehr auch breite Anwendung in anderen Krankheitsfeldern. Damit nimmt auch die Bedeutung von diagnostischen Algorithmen zu. Weitere Kapitel wurden ergänzt, wie das Neonatalscreening und das therapeutische Drug Monitoring.
