In spite of numerous excellent lectures in otology, we feel that there is still a lack of a work that meets the needs of the general practitioner to the greatest extent. A compendium will never be able to introduce the inexperienced into a new discipline. Just as tables of history are worthless for introduction to the instruction of history, and at most give a sham knowledge lacking in content through the knowledge of a few dates and names, so the knowledge derived from the compendia is necessarily and schematically incorporated into the body without permitting an intrusion into matter. But if the beginner wants to be introduced to the discipline from extensive doctrinal knowledge, he soon loses track of things, because he is not at all able to distinguish the essential from the non-essential; but a straightforward textbook that wants to bring everything must also carry along a lot of unessential things as ballast, some of which have only historical or rarity value. Our book comprises two courses of study, one for the beginner, and a second for the more advanced.
