In order to avoid the often very restrictive operation, combination therapies, such as simple ablation of advanced carcinoma or tumorectomy in early carcinomas together with radiation, have come to the fore. The significance of the repeatedly discussed pdioperative radiation and the indication for it are carefully discussed.
