After almost half a century of intensive research, the words of the Swiss paediatric clinician WILLI still apply, that there is hardly a medically sadder and at the same time more medically interesting disease than leukemia. This volume contains 19 overview papers and 73 individual lectures on the subject of leukemia, which the organizers and editors have selected as the only topic of the XV German Hematologists' Congress on October 4 to 6, 1971 in Kain. Even with this concentration, many aspects of experimental leukosis had to be dispensed with. On the other hand, the 90 lectures will bring the currently probably most comprehensive German-language overview of the clinics of leukosis, including: pathology, cytology, cytogenetics, cytochemistry, proliferation kinetics, biochemistry, epidemiology, differential diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, substitution treatment, prophylaxis and the fight against complications. Our first thanks go to the authors from the Foreign Republic and from the Federal Republic of Germany, who have summarized their personal experience and their knowledge of the literature into critical statements and weighed recommendations in the lectures on all practically important forms of leukemia, first as conference lectures, later in special revisions for this volume. We hope that - with the help of a strict thematic system and a keyword index - the specialists as well as the practical colleagues will find the current information they are looking for in the volume.
