In diesem Abschnitt soll die Differenzierung der lebendigen Masse vom morphologischen Standpunkt aus dargestellt werden. Es ist notwendig, diese Aufgabe genau zu umgrenzen. Der differenzierte Zustand, den die lebendige Masse der verschiedenen Organe und Gewebe beispielsweise in den Fasern eines quergestreiften Muskels schlie lich darbietet, kann im allgemeinen Teil dieses Handbuches nat rlich nicht beschrieben werden. Man wird ihn in den einzelnen besonderen Kapiteln geschildert finden. Nur der Vorgang der Differenzie- rung kann zum Gegenstand einer allgemeinen Betrachtung gemacht werden. Und wenn wir uns dabei an die morphologische Seite der Differenzierung halten, so wird es sich um das Auftreten der Strukturen handeln, welche die lebendige Masse in den Zellen und in den Grundsubstanzen ausbildet. Durch den Erwerb spezifischer Produkte von bestimmter Form und Gr e sowie von bestimmter r umlicher Anordnung entfernt sich die lebendige Substanz der verschiedenen Zellen, Zellverb nde und Gewebe vom urspr nglichen Zustand, dem indiffe- renten, und hierdurch erlangt sie, indem diese Entwicklung nach den verschie- denen Richtungen des Nervengewebes, des Muskel- oder Bindegewebes usw. auseinandergeht, eine jeweils typische Beschaffenheit, durch die sie sich von der andersartigen lebendigen Masse unterscheidet.
