Dementia seems to play a special role among the chronic diseases. It is considered a disruptive factor in acute care hospitals. The author investigates this phenomenon with the help of habitus theory and systems theory in order to work out why, in his view, the hospital system does not sufficiently address these new challenges. In particular, the interaction between physicians and nurses in the care of people with dementia in acute care hospitals is examined.
